Biography: Jean M. Bradt, Ph.D.

Jean M. Bradt [pron. BROT] wears many hats. First, she was born with the bipolar complex. (See Chapter 5a)

Second, she earned a Ph.D. in psychology at Loyola University of Chicago at the age of 40, before she was diagnosed (at the age of 41). After teaching psychology at the college level for eight years, she retired and formed a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, Any Dream Will Do, Inc., to give advice and support to other consumers and to fight the prejudice against consumers. The primary focus of the corporation is this website, Will I Go Crazy?, through which Dr. Bradt uses her knowledge of psychology and her experience as a consumer to educate non-consumers about mental illness and consumers about how to cope. As of April 1, 2003, the website, run exclusively by Dr. Bradt, received over 33,000 hits.

Dr. Bradt edits and publishes a 52-page literary magazine, the Any Dream Will Do Review, in which consumers from all around the world describe the experience of being mentally ill. Those who donate about $10.00 to the corporation receive a subscription to the magazine as a token of their appreciation. See Chapter 8 for more information about the magazine.

Also as a psychologist, Dr. Bradt was one of the presenters at the September, 2001, NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is available for further public speaking engagements on the topic of mental illness.

Third, she is a published (by magazines other than the Any Dream Will Do Review) writer of fiction.  She teaches writing on a volunteer basis to ex- and out-patients at Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (NNAMHS), some of whom have contributed excellent stories to the Any Dream Will Do Review. She is the author of "When A Bird Cries" and Other Stories, a collection of Psych-Inspirational stories which you can read onsite. And you can read more of her Psych-Inspirational Fiction in the Stories area.

Fourth, Dr. Bradt is an advocate for consumers. She sits on the Northern Nevada Mental Health and Developmental Services Advisory Board as a representative of the northern Nevada poor and disabled. Her job is to keep her finger on the pulse of the disabled community and channel any significant community input to the board. The board filters this input, then sends it to the Nevada State Commission on Mental Health and Developmental Services, which proposes new laws to the Nevada legislature.

Dr. Bradt continues to educate about mental illness and related issues and to fight the stigma. She will never stop.
